Northstar Church exists as an instrument that God can use to change people's lives. We cooperate with the Holy Spirit in offering guidance in God-ordained process of discovery. People discover abundant life as they come to know God personally by confession of sin and acceptance of Jesus Christ. They discover inner peace and a deeper trust in God as they grow in Christian maturity. They further discover meaning and direction as the Spirit reveals to them their spiritual gift(s). Finally, people discover passion and purpose by using their gift(s) to help other believers and to disciple those who do not know Christ. Northstar seeks to be an agent of encouragement and help in all of these steps.

A healthy church is one where people are growing in their relationship to God, and in developing satisfying relationships with one another. It is also a congregation that is growing numerically through an openness to both seekers, and to believers looking for a church home. A major factor in that growth is a clear sense of the powerful presence of God in the large group experience, or worship, and in the small group experience, namely Growth Groups. Finally, health is developed by maintaining a clear sense of identity with the Blacksburg community and the people who live there.
